Platform as a Service - Key Trends

PaaS is growing at a CAGR of 28% in India as the sector gains momentum. Given India’s massive developer community, it augers well as not only is the rate of growth high but, in time, will also have a measurable volume.

As cloud offerings mature, it is becoming increasingly difficult to segregate between IaaS and PaaS offerings. While the general trend has been to build the foundation on IaaS, we have witnessed a sharp rise in PaaS uptake, especially in the case of large enterprises or those with a relatively advanced technology function.

For any organization on the cloud journey, the ultimate aim is to build applications on the cloud that can be provisioned as SaaS. And that journey begins with infrastructure, which leads to application development and, finally, application hosting.

However, building a cloud-native ecosystem has its challenges and is a fairly complex task. Reducing these complexities is a strong use case for those envisioning an authentic cloud experience.

And in this world of convergence, a new approach to looking at networks, security, and appliances is part of many of the PaaS offerings available in the market.

Initial years saw PaaS being used for web-based application development, but now the breadth of work done is more expansive, covering areas like databases, AI/ML, networks etc.

With most organizations driving a digital transformation agenda, it is opportunities galore for the entire tech fraternity, be it the product specialists, the service providers and finally, the IT community within organizations who drive these initiatives. While each has a role and is reasonably well defined, as we advance, we can expect a surge in in-house development, and organizations having the necessary expertise with PaaS development will have the required edge.
